Conference “Problems of Christian Education in the 21st Century” at St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Petersburg

On October 11, 2025, an interdenominational conference, “Problems of Christian Education in the 21st Century,” was held at St. Mary’s Cathedral (St. Petersburg). The conference was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the opening of the preachers’ courses at Annenkirche in 1925.

The event brought together ministers, teachers, students, and parishioners interested in the development of theological and church-educational ministry. Participants had the opportunity to listen to reports, take part in discussions and a master class. A tour of the Sunday school facilities of St. Mary’s Church was also held, which evoked genuine admiration from the guests.

Let us briefly mention some of the presentations.

• Continuous learning is the key to the salvation of both the learner and those around them (1 Timothy 4:16). Therefore, permanent education is necessary. The Lutheran Church has been teaching the basics of the faith for centuries and has accumulated extensive experience in this area. However, a problem with the varying scopes of the Basics of Christian Faith course in different congregations has now become apparent. In the Introductory Theology Course, instructors must aim for a uniform level of preparation among students. It is important to note that in those congregations where a the Introductory Theology Course is teached, spiritual life becomes more active because the growth in knowledge creates a desire to apply it.

• Another important topic discussed at the conference was small groups. Are they a challenge for traditional churches? Or are they a good opportunity for the spiritual fellowship of parishioners in large congregations? Furthermore, a problem arises: can any Christian teach any other Christians? For the Lutheran Church, the answer is no. This raises the question of the educational level and competence of small group leaders, as well as the selection of materials.

• Presenters also showcased their projects: a Children’s Catechism (catechismus.net), children’s Christian science clubs, an original school program “Moral Education of Children Based on Biblical Stories,” and others.
