NGO Nekropol meets with gov’t officials, discusses preservation of historical cemeteries
On July 31, 2023, the board of trustees of Nekropol held their first meeting. Nekropol is an interdenominational nonprofit social-cause association registered by the ELCIR to help preserve historical Lutheran and other cemeteries and coordinate the initiatives of different Christian denominations to do the same.
The Nekropol trustees discussed with governmental officials attending the meeting such matters as deteriorating cemeteries, uncared-for tombs, vandalism, and deficiencies in the applicable laws. They also made plans to apply for grants, involve experts, meet with specific local administrators, and invite other religious communities to join this work. The attending officials from the Department for Interaction with Religious Organizations of the St. Petersburg Governor’s Administration noted the importance of preserving historical legacy, agreed to cooperate, and wished success to the newly-established organization.
