On November 4, 2022, the Lutheran Church of Kazan, Tatarstan, hosted a meeting of the ministers of the ELCIR Uralic Deanery, which gathered almost all of the deanery’s pastors, deacons, and catechists. Those who could not come, joined online.
The main topic for discussion was “Modern Heresies.” Bishop Ivan Laptev presented a report on this topic via a Zoom meeting. The deanery’s ministers, too, presented their reports on the various theological challenges for the Lutheran Church today, ranging from contemporary forms of Bible criticism to the signs of liberation theology.
The meeting also discussed the vacant position of the Dean of the Uralic Deanery. By a majority vote, the participants proposed Senior Pastor Artur Semyonov of Kazan Lutheran Church as a candidate to be considered by the ELCIR Synodal Council.
